Hideaway was built in 1740 by the "Forstmeister" (forest conservator) of the Austrian empress on the site of two much older dwellings. Salt has been mined in Hallstatt for 7000 years, and the town’s links with the rest of the world are just as ancient. Today, the “world’s most beautiful lakeside town” (Alexander v. Humboldt) draws one million visitors each year. Hallstatt has UNESCO World Heritage status, and the Celtic burial sites up on the Salzberg (literally “salt mountain”) are among the world’s most important testaments of human history. Visitors can take a trip down the mine for a fascinating insight into the history of a village. You can experience the breathtaking beauty of the countryside up close with a whole range of activities. In the wintertime, there’s the alpine ski run in Krippenstein, snow shoeing at 2100m or the ski resort of Gosau. Climbing, mountain biking, swimming and diving, golf and hiking, and guided tours of the Mammuthöhle and Eishöhle ice caves, are all on offer throughout the rest of the year.
