Hotel Liberty

Freedom - Redefined!

At Hotel Liberty in Offenburg, the concept of freedom is redefined. That’s because the hotel is located in a former prison for radical visionaries and pioneers of freedom and democracy. The team from Knoblauch-Design is responsible for the transformation from a dreary prison to a fascinating design hotel. Thus, the historical and sensitive heritage of the building was rethought with the right portion of comfort and lightness and a careful handling of existing substance. Retreat, concentration and the moment are also needs of our contemporary society and form the philosophical basis of the design concept.

Cosy oases of well-being paired with uniqueness

The hotel with its total of 38 exceptional rooms and suites consists of two separate buildings and a new intermediate building. The rooms and suites are distributed in the buildings, while the public area with restaurant, bar and lobby is located in the large glass cube sitting in between. On the one hand, it is a visual link between the two hotel wings, but it also symbolises the former prison yard. On an intermediate level, a living room for the hotel guests was built in, based on the former common room of the prisoners. Many robust materials and dark, rough surfaces are used throughout the hotel. Many of the former cells have been connected to create more spacious rooms. The thick original walls and steel doors do not let the history of the building be forgotten, but they create a new definition of cosiness and combine with the expectations of the discerning guest. Fine parquet flooring and multiple vaults made of historic bricks, mouldings hidden in the walls now flood the old structures with warm light. Large, free-standing bathtubs and exquisite fittings as well as noble interiors turn the rooms into cosy oases of well-being paired with uniqueness.

A place of comfort can also be found in the restaurant “Water & Bread”, with open grill, serving contemporary local and international cuisine, while the White & Brown Bar on the mezzanine floor offers local fruit brandies, gin specialities and homemade rum from Baden and many other specialities in a stylish ambience. Outstanding wines and small delicacies can also be tasted in the historic vaulted cellar of Hotel Liberty. Located directly at the city park and with a magnificent view of the greenery, the outdoor terrace is available to both guests of the hotel and external guests for culinary pleasures with all senses.

Best Room – Rooftoop Suite

The Rooftop Suite extends for 75m² under Hotel Liberty exposed wooden beams. The inviting, private space has been skilfully partitioned off with a separate living and dining area and an en suite bathroom with free-standing bath tub, shower and toilet. The built-in roof windows are absolutely perfect for gazing at the stars. A stunning interior and a blend of carefully selected, hand-made furniture and works of art, as well as a small in-room library, add the finishing touches to the Rooftop Suite.

Destination Tip

Offenburg, this picturesque gateway to the Black Forest, is a city of trade fairs and media as well as being a hotspot for culture and shopping. And of course a wine metropolis surrounded by nature in abundance. To the east of Offenburg, vineyards extend all the way up to the edges of the Black Forest. Riesling and Pinot noir are two of the fine grapes grown here. The wines are tasted and enjoyed in cosy inns, snug seasonal wine taverns and first-class eateries.

Culinary delights, culture & Black Forest
The Ortenau region in Baden is a must-do stop-off on any grand world tour. After all, the region boasts one of the three most significant Gothic cathedrals in the world, as well as Roman ruins, one of only two of the world’s Fabergé museums, a unique natural landscape, the world’s finest beer, the world’s biggest cuckoo clock, the best ham, almost 50 Michelin-starred restaurants – and all this within a less than 40-minute radius of Hotel Liberty! Take a leisurely stroll through the wonderful city of Strasbourg along the banks of the river Ill and then following the canals. Immerse yourself in a world of shopping with a good dose of French “savoir vivre”. Walk through peaceful parks or bustling marketplaces. The whole city centre has been designated an architectural world heritage site by UNESCO. It’s almost Mediterranean in the heart of historic Freiburg: at the Rathausplatz, or in Oberlindenplatz or Augustinerplatz, along the burbling “creek” in the old town, around the secluded fountains, in cosy bars and street cafés. Or at the truly unmissable market at the foot of the Freiburg Minster, which is crammed with local delicacies from Baden and Alsace. In the Black Forest you’ll find sparkling lakes and picturesque Black Forest farms, and quaint inns which welcome you to linger for a while. Hikers, mountain bikers and motorcyclists will all be amazed at the panoramic routes here. And that’s not all by a long stretch. To the west the Black Forest mountains fall gently away into the wide Upper Rhine plain. And it’s right here that the grape trellises stand, growing internationally award-winning wines.
