In a hotel room, the bed usually stands against a wall. The corridor ends at the door. And if something develops a crack, we repair it. Logical. Until you step inside K5 Hotel Tokyo. Because here, surprisingly many things begin with one simple question: Why does it have to be this way?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Building That Doesn\u2019t Hide Its Past<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1923, a bank building<\/strong> designed by Japanese architect Yoshitoki Nishimura<\/strong> was constructed in Kabutocho, Tokyo\u2019s historic financial district. Almost a century later, the Swedish architects of Claesson Koivisto Rune<\/strong> found themselves inside the very same building, tasked with turning it into something entirely new.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn\u2019t start from scratch. When K5 Hotel Tokyo<\/a> opened in 2020, the building was still allowed to show its age. Raw concrete remained visible, while historic parquet floors, windows, high ceilings and traces of different eras were preserved. Old and new were never asked to compete with one another. Perhaps that is exactly why what happens next works so well.<\/strong> Behind these almost century-old walls, the result is not a hotel that simply looks back. It is a place where no one seems to have been afraid of asking a few unusual questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Spaces Change the Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The corridors were placed on the noisier, street-facing side of the building, further away from the hotel rooms. The flooring pattern, meanwhile, simply continues through the doorway into the room, almost as if someone forgot to draw the boundary between the two. And then there is the bed. Right in the middle of the room. Above it hangs a large circular curtain made from translucent, indigo-dyed fabric. Close it and a separate space appears within the room. Open it again and everything becomes one. The idea also echoes the Japanese tradition of tatami and futon<\/strong>, where the sleeping area is not automatically defined by a permanent piece of furniture placed against a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And anyone thinking that is the end of the unusual ideas should head a few floors down. On the ground floor, different social and culinary spaces flow into one another. And hidden away in the basement is even a beer hall \u2013 the Tokyo home of Brooklyn Brewery.<\/strong> Upstairs, on the hotel floors, an entirely different world begins: one of tranquillity. One building. Countless roles. And fewer and fewer reasons to draw clear boundaries between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s Even a Word for It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Aimai<\/strong>. A Japanese word for something that is not clearly defined. Something that exists somewhere in between. Something whose boundaries are difficult to draw precisely. The architects of Claesson Koivisto Rune <\/strong>made this idea one of the guiding principles behind K5. And suddenly, everything we have seen so far begins to make sense. The corridor can become a little bit part of the room. One space can have several functions. A curtain can create an entirely new space. And an almost century-old building can preserve its past while beginning something completely new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no need to choose. Perhaps that is what makes the design of K5<\/a> so interesting.<\/strong> It doesn\u2019t work because the building has simply been filled with as many beautiful objects as possible. It works because it makes us look differently at things we had long taken for granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Crack in Gold<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sooner or later, even the most beautiful architecture gets a scratch. Or a crack. In the tiled areas of the upper floors, the movement of the old building can cause fine cracks to appear. The affected tiles could simply be replaced, erasing any sign that something had happened. At K5, they chose another solution. The cracks are highlighted with gold, drawing inspiration from the Japanese idea of kintsugi, in which damage is not hidden but becomes a visible part of an object\u2019s story. It is difficult to imagine a more fitting response from this building. A building from 1923 does not need to look as though it was built in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hotel does not have to be only a hotel. <\/strong>A bed does not have to stand against a wall. And something does not have to disappear simply because it is imperfect. The former bank building is now part of a new chapter for Kabutocho \u2013 a district that has itself been searching for a new role, with K5 intended to play its part in the area\u2019s revival.<\/strong> And us? By the end, we have learned a new Japanese word, gone for a beer in the basement of a former bank, crossed a few boundaries without even noticing and discovered that even a crack does not necessarily have to be a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
