A palace dating back to 1861, portraits of Portuguese poets set into ornate stucco ceilings, contemporary art in historic rooms and a restaurant inspired by one of Jos\u00e9 Saramago\u2019s best-known novels. The story of Torel Palace Porto began long before the building became a hotel \u2013 and that is precisely where the idea behind what it is today begins.<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look up. From the ceiling of a hotel room, Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es looks back. And he had been there for a very long time before anyone decided that this palace would one day become a hotel. The Palacete Campos Navarro was built in 1861 for Ant\u00f3nio de Campos Navarro as one of Porto\u2019s most magnificent private residences.<\/strong> The family\u2019s interest in art and literature left its mark on the house: Portuguese literary figures found their place among the elaborate stucco ceilings. More than a century and a half later, these very details helped determine which story the building would continue to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Started on the Ceiling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The original bust of Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es can still be found in one of the rooms today.<\/strong> So can that of Almeida Garrett. Rather than ending up behind glass, they became the starting point for something new. Today, the 24 rooms and suites are dedicated to Portuguese writers and poets, including Fernando Pessoa, Florbela Espanca, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Cam\u00f5es and E\u00e7a de Queiroz. Contemporary works by Jorge Curval joined the historic portraits, while surprisingly modern elements found their way into the old rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some of them, for example, there is a large, fully mirrored cube. Looks like contemporary art. It\u2019s the bathroom. And perhaps that detail says more about Torel Palace Porto<\/a> than almost anything else. The past has remained, but no one is pretending it is still 1861.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Was Worth Preserving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the palace\u2019s most impressive historic features is the Claraboia, the elaborately designed skylight above the building. Its eight decorative motifs include botanical elements as well as Mercury, Minerva and symbols representing industry and navigation.<\/strong> Restoring it was such a painstaking process that the work on the building was extended by several months. It also reveals the balance that runs throughout the entire hotel: certain details were carefully preserved, while something new was allowed to emerge right beside them. Historic stucco and contemporary portraits. Cam\u00f5es on the ceiling and a modern hotel beneath him.<\/strong> There was never any need to choose between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When You Stop Reading a Book and Start Experiencing It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Literature, however, does not end at the doors of the rooms. The BLIND <\/em>restaurant is inspired by Jos\u00e9 Saramago\u2019s novel Blindness.<\/strong> Guests do not know in advance exactly what the multi-course menu will bring. At times during the experience, sight can recede into the background, allowing taste, scent, sound and texture to become all the more important. Here, literature is suddenly no longer something we simply look at on the ceiling or recognise in the name of a room. It becomes something we experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Story That Continues to Be Written<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When preserving a historic building, the instinct is often to freeze time as much as possible. At Torel Palace Porto<\/a>, something different happened. <\/strong>The Cam\u00f5es bust remained. The stucco remained. The Claraboia remained. At the same time, new portraits joined the old ones, writers\u2019 names appeared on bedroom doors, and a novel became a culinary experience. The story of the Palacete Campos Navarro therefore ended neither in 1861 nor at the moment it became a hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Torel Palace Porto treats its past like a book whose final page was deliberately left blank.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So there is still room to keep writing it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
