Lucerne is surrounded by the magnificent mountain scenery at the northwest end of Lake Lucerne. It lies on the River Reuss, which separates the old town from the new town. The most famous bridge straddling the city’s divide is the mediaeval wooden Kapellbrücke with its water tower. Other sights in Lucerne include the Jesuit Church, the Lion of Lucerne; the Museggmauer wall and the modern Art and Congress Centre (KKL), which runs a diverse programme of cultural and musical events and a number of festivals. The charming old town with its wonderful historic houses has a whole range of boutiques to tempt the shopper. The surrounding area is also well worth exploring. A cable car trip up Lucerne’s nearest mountains, Pilatus and Rigi, and a cruise on a steamer across Lake Lucerne are just two great day trip options.
