Between water and the Alps, orchards and architecture, Lake Constance reveals a side that perhaps deserves to be discovered far more often. At Seegut Zeppelin near Friedrichshafen, the old idea of a summer retreat is given a surprisingly contemporary interpretation.
One Lake, Four Countries and Plenty of Freedom
Perhaps the special appeal of Lake Constance lies in the fact that it can never quite be pinned down. Germany? Austria? Switzerland? A quick detour to Liechtenstein? At Lake Constance, borders become surprisingly insignificant.
Far more important is the water.
Sometimes it lies smooth and almost silver before you, sometimes the opposite shore disappears into the haze, and on clear days the Alpine panorama creates a backdrop that reminds you just how extraordinary the location of this lake really is. Add to that vineyards and orchards, historic towns, contemporary culture and a landscape that is perfect for exploring by bicycle, on foot or from the water.
Perhaps that is exactly the most beautiful way to experience Lake Constance: without too much of a plan.
Take a boat across the lake in the morning, stroll through a garden in the afternoon, visit a museum or simply sit somewhere along the shore and watch the sailing boats slowly disappear on the horizon.
Friedrichshafen adds another dimension to this landscape: a pioneering spirit. The history of the Zeppelins remains closely connected to the city to this day. Covering around 4,000 square metres, the Zeppelin Museum houses the world’s largest collection on the history of airship travel, while the Dornier Museum tells a century of aviation and aerospace history. And those who wish can even experience the region from the perspective that made Friedrichshafen famous: from the air, on a flight aboard a Zeppelin.
The New Summer Retreat
A few kilometres outside the centre of Friedrichshafen lies Fischbach. And here, directly on the lake, is a place that fits Lake Constance remarkably well: Seegut Zeppelin, Member of Lifestylehotels.
Four hectares of landscaped parkland, centuries-old trees and private access to Lake Constance form the setting. In between stand a historic villa and four understated contemporary buildings.
Interestingly, the story of this place began long before hotel guests checked in here. In 1907, Reutlingen textile manufacturer Gustav Gminder purchased the property as a “summer retreat” for his family and had Villa Gminder built. Following an eventful history, the estate was extensively revitalised.
Today, you could say: the summer retreat is back.
It just looks a little different in the 21st century.
Architecture That Takes a Step Back
The listed Villa Gminder still forms the historic heart of the estate. Grouped around it are Haus Ferdinand, Haus Helene, Haus Isabella and Haus August – named after members of the Zeppelin family.
Their dark-stained spruce façades and green tented roofs do not try to compete with the landscape. Quite the opposite: the architecture deliberately takes a step back.
That is perhaps one of the most pleasant qualities of Seegut Zeppelin. There was no attempt here to fit as much hotel as possible into as little space as possible. The real luxury is space.
Space between the buildings. Space beneath old trees. Space by the water.
The 62 rooms open onto the garden or the lake with a balcony or terrace. Wood, natural materials and a calm design bring something of the landscape indoors. And then there is always that view outside – into the greenery, between the trees or across Lake Constance.
From the Garden to the Plate
The surroundings also play a central role in the culinary experience.
Restaurant Pinus is located in the historic Villa Gminder with its neo-Gothic vaults and spacious lakeside terrace. Its sharing concept places eating together at the heart of the experience.
The cuisine focuses on creative vegetarian dishes. Fish and meat are deliberately used as additions; meat products predominantly follow a nose-to-tail approach. Much of it, however, begins right outside the door: the Seegut’s garden is part of the culinary concept.
Perhaps this idea of sharing fits particularly well with a property that feels less like a traditional hotel and more like a generous private estate.
Best of All: Having No Plans
Of course, you could explore the entire Lake Constance region from Seegut Zeppelin. Visit Mainau Island. Go to museums. Hike. Cycle. Cross the lake by boat.
You could.
But you are just as welcome to stay.
Find a spot beneath the trees in the garden. Walk down to the private lake access. Swim. Read. Visit the sauna in the Garden Spa at Haus Isabella, book a massage or spend a little time in the villa’s yoga room.
And at some point, that particular form of luxury sets in – one that may have become more precious today than many other things: there is simply nowhere you need to be.
Because Lake Constance does not necessarily have to be the journey you take someday. Perhaps it is exactly the journey you should take now. And if we could choose one address for it? We would quite happily sit beneath the old trees at Seegut Zeppelin, look across to the water and rediscover the old art of the summer retreat.
