An evening at the opera does not necessarily begin with the first note. Sometimes it begins in the room or suite. The refined Boutiquehotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper has just over a dozen of them. The doors bear the names of composers who are inseparably linked to Vienna’s musical history: Mahler, Strauss, Tchaikovsky or Mozart. Names that already turn into music in your mind before the orchestra has even taken its place. For a moment, here in the intimate Gründerzeit building on a quiet side street, you are entirely with yourself. Far removed from everyday life, with one thought or another already on Figaro, Tosca or Violetta.

The dress from the suitcase is already hanging in the wardrobe and is gently smoothed once more, the jacket carefully adjusted – and then: a glance in the mirror. The lips are touched up. A short walk through Vienna’s city centre, a fairytale entrance – until the doors of the State Opera open and red velvet, voices and the sound of the orchestra take over the evening.

A visit to the Vienna State Opera is almost inevitably part of a stay at the boutique hotel. It is not unusual for voices to still echo through the hotel after the performance or over breakfast the next morning: “What a soprano!” – “That production!” – “I had goosebumps during the final scene.” The opera may be over, but it continues to resonate in the hotel for a little while longer. Especially around the Opera Ball, when the evening begins with canapés and small bites and the atmosphere is just a little more excited than usual.
