Boutiquehotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper – A House of Many Voices

In Vienna, the names Mahler, Mozart and Strauss appear in many places. At Boutiquehotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper – A House of Many VoicesZur Wiener Staatsoper, you’ll even find them on the bedroom doors. Behind them are patterned fabrics, carefully chosen colours and the unmistakable touch of a British interior designer. A Viennese townhouse with more than a century of history has begun a new chapter – and it is well worth taking a closer look.

A New Story Behind Historic Walls

Just a few steps from Kärntner Straße lies Krugerstraße, where Boutiquehotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper has been welcoming guests for more than a hundred years. In early 2024, the hotel reopened following an extensive redesign. The building’s historic 19th-century architecture remained an important part of its identity, while British interior designer Nina Campbell was brought in from London to reimagine its interiors. And anyone expecting understated, identical hotel rooms may be in for a surprise.

A British Designer with an Eye for Viennese Details

Nina Campbell is known for her distinctive use of colour, pattern and textiles. At Hotel Zur Wiener Staatsoper, her signature style is easy to spot. Paisley patterns adorn the walls, curtains introduce colourful accents, and classic herringbone parquet lies underfoot. Modern bathrooms and thoughtfully selected furnishings complete the picture. Viennese craftspeople also played a part in the redesign. Local carpenters and workshops contributed their skills to interiors that bring British design ideas together with the building’s history. It is the kind of place where you could happily spend quite some time simply looking at the details.

Twelve Rooms, Many Personalities

The hotel has twelve individually designed rooms and suites, named after composers closely associated with Vienna’s musical history: Mozart, Mahler, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. And just as their music differs, so do the impressions left by the rooms. In one, a patterned fabric catches your eye first. In another, it might be the colour of the walls or a small detail beside the bed. A stay here reveals a house where every room has a personality of its own.

A Little Gem Worth Lingering In

At the heart of the hotel is a room with a particularly fitting name: Schmuckstückchen, a German expression for a little gem. This is where the day begins over breakfast. Later, guests can gather for a Viennese coffee or a glass of champagne. Its inviting design makes spending time at the hotel between exploring the city feel like part of the experience. And perhaps that is when you notice a detail you walked straight past the first time.

One Last Look Across the Rooftops

At the top of the hotel, a different perspective of Vienna awaits. Through the windows, the city’s rooftops and St Stephen’s Cathedral come into view. The two-bedroom penthouse also has its own terrace overlooking Vienna’s famous cathedral.

From here, the city stretches out before us, its musical history having accompanied us since the moment we entered the hotel. Below, the streets lead towards the opera house, coffeehouses and historic façades. Inside, fabrics, colours and handcrafted details tell the story of the building’s latest transformation. More than a hundred years of history cannot be captured in a single interior.

But sometimes twelve rooms are enough to tell quite a lot of it.
