Where walls once divided, there is now space for calm, light and connection: Hotel Wilmina transforms a former courthouse and prison into a place of tranquil beauty and mindful hospitality.
Berlin is famous for its inexhaustible energy, pulsating creativity and layered history – a city that never stands still. Among traffic and urban noise, finding moments of quiet seems almost impossible.
And yet, hidden along Kantstraße, a new kind of refuge awaits: the Hotel Wilmina. Once the site of a courthouse and women’s prison enclosed by high brick walls, Grüntuch Ernst Architects have sensitively reimagined this historic site, turning a place of seclusion into one of serenity.
Enclosed by walls that now offer protection instead of confinement, Wilmina feels almost monastic. Lush courtyards connect the buildings, creating peaceful spaces to pause. Where barred windows and locked doors once defined the place, light now floods through 44 rooms and 22 lofts. The atrium, illuminated by a Bocci light installation, opens to the sky; a rooftop terrace, library, spa, and pool complete the sense of effortless calm.
History is still present – but it breathes freely here. The subtle traces of the past, like the half-vanished window grilles, serve as gentle reminders of transformation and release.
The same spirit flows through the Restaurant Lovis, housed in the former gateway building. Chef Sophia Rudolph creates modern interpretations of regional cuisine, while the hotel’s own bakery produces fresh, handmade bread daily – for guests and locals alike.
Wilmina feels like a small neighborhood, where openness and exchange replace boundaries. At the Lotta Day Bar, guests can enjoy waffles with berries and buckwheat crunch; at the Lovis Bar, drinks are classified not by labels but by taste profiles. Meanwhile, the former courthouse, now the Amtsalon, has become a multidisciplinary space for temporary art, architecture and design projects – a dialogue between past and present.
