Design & Architecture

REFUGIUM LUNZ: Timeless

The old house on the church square has stood for centuries. Its oldest parts date back to 1661—a date engraved into the intricately carved beams of the parlour. Today, this historic building is home to Refugium Lunz, a guesthouse revived by the creative minds behind FORMDEPOT—partners known for breathing new life into old architecture. The house looks back with respect and forward with care. Here, longevity finds its expression in harmonious design: in ancient stone, timeless lines, historic wood—and wood that is allowed to become historic.

THE OLD PARLOUR

At over 300 years old, the parlour is the heart of the house—its grande dame. A stay at Refugium Lunz is not complete without seeing this room, with its finely crafted beamed ceiling and the light that dances across its historic textures. The space was revealed layer by layer. Missing pieces of woodwork were lovingly recreated—in Joachim Mayr’s kitchen oven. The parlour whispers the house’s philosophy in a voice that is quiet, warm, and deliberate.

STONE THAT ENDURES

While the flooring is new—out of necessity—the story it rests on is still tangible. The reception, salon kitchen, and outdoor area are all finished with Kanfanar, a Croatian limestone known for its soft, honest look. In the wellness area, Breccia Romana dominates—a classic limestone from central Italy with a warm, clouded grain.

WOOD THAT LASTS

Where there is no stone or tile, there is wood—covering floors and cladding walls. The planks and paneling bring warmth and depth to the Refugium. The wood flooring comes from Schotten & Hansen, a German manufacturer from Upper Bavaria known for treating this durable material with deep respect, preserving its natural structure to ensure it ages gracefully over time.

MEASURED DESIGN, REFINED STYLE

The furnishings? A balanced blend of custom pieces and lovingly curated design objects, chosen with an eye for quality and materials that will still be around tomorrow. Many of the bespoke furnishings were crafted by Tischlerei Mayr, a local carpenter just around the corner from the Refugium—both in location and in spirit. Nestled between washbasins, benches, and storage areas are carefully chosen favorites like the Barrel Lounge Chair by Sophisticated Living, the Ozz lamp-table hybrid by Miniforms, and outdoor loungers by Varaschin.

TEXTILES FOR A LIFETIME

The tactile richness of Refugium Lunz also reveals itself in its textiles—unobtrusive, yet full of structure and personality. The concept was developed by FiLAFiL! textile designer Teresa Urbano and features fabrics from the Danish textile house Kvadrat, alongside naturally tanned leathers from Sørensen, another Danish atelier. These are textiles built to last a lifetime—and quite possibly beyond.
